Over the last few months it has become blazingly apparent to me that the chemicals we are bringing into our home through furniture, decor, wallpaper etc is slowly killing us.
I have been reading article after article, study after study and book after book as to why this is the case. So why is change happening so slowly?
I believe it is for two reasons.
1. We want what we want and we want it now.
It is so easy to walk into a store, fall in love with something and whip out the credit card. We don’t want to have to bother looking for the healthier alternative.
I definitely used to be like this. I was semi-aware that these items were really not good for the health of my home, but if it worked perfectly with my scheme and was the right price I wasn’t going to fight it.
Then I started to get real. My husband and I started talking about having a family. Suddenly all of the articles that had held my attention for 5 seconds in the past were being scoured over for every little detail. I wanted to make sure that I was healthy when I was pregnant and that our baby would have a toxic-free home to grow up in.
2. The toxic-free options really aren’t that pretty
There really are very few options that are gorgeous in the organic/toxic free department. Why is this? Do I really have to have a hippy style to have a non-toxic home? And when I DO find something I like, why do I have to pay a fortune for it?
I believe that it is all about to change. 80% of my clients in the last year wanted everything to be toxic free and organic where possible. People are starting to get educated and the demand is out there. We just need to push for the shift to happen more quickly.
There are of course non-toxic furniture and decor items that are affordable, but you have to know where to look and the right questions to ask. There are also mainstream items (like fabric, furniture, blankets etc) that are non-toxic, but for some reason they don’t market themselves that way. So do a little research and you can start making much better choices for you and your family.
