There is a time for bold, electric colours like kelly green and tangerine orange. Any designer would be lying if they said they didn’t get excited at the thought of using them. But the truth of the matter is that daring colours like these are not always a realistic design solution for most clients. People tire of bright colours more quickly than subdued ones. As designers it is important for us to not only deliver a timeless space for the client, but also to add some interest and flavor into their homes.
I am talking about shades of gray. Elegant, refined, timeless grey. Gray doesn’t just have to be different shades of black. If you add grey to any colour it will subdue the brightness and make it automatically more user friendly. Gray adds softness, makes a colour more peaceful, and turns down the loud characteristics that turn off so many.
By using shades of grey it makes adding colour to a space much easier and more acceptable to most people. To all of my readers out there who love black, white and taupe or to those of you who are afraid of the brighter edges of the colour wheel – here is your chance to finally use some colour! Grays are classic and they will stand the test of time.
Here are some of my favorite shades of gray from Benjamin Moore. Get inspired and enjoy!
